BMI Explained: What the Number Means and Where It Falls Short
Body Mass Index is one of the most widely used health numbers in the world, and one of the most misunderstood. It's a fast, cheap screening tool that works well across large populations — but applied to a single person without context, it can mislead. What BMI is and how it's calculated
BMI relates your weight to your height. In metric units the formula is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared: BMI = kg ÷ m². In imperial units it's 703 × lb ÷ in². Where BMI came from

Consider a 5'10" (178 cm) rugby player weighing 200 lb (91 kg). Their BMI lands around 29 — squarely "overweight," bordering "obese" — despite single-digit body fat and high fitness. The number is technically correct and completely misleading, because BMI counts dense muscle the same as fat. This isn't a rare edge case for anyone who strength-trains seriously; it's the clearest demonstration that BMI measures weight-for-height, not health, and must be read with what you know about the body it describes.
Better-together measurements
Several measures address BMI's blind spots. Waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio capture central fat, which carries more metabolic risk than fat on the hips or limbs. Waist-to-hip ratio describes fat distribution. Body-fat percentage, via calipers, bioelectrical scales, or clinical scans, separates fat from muscle directly. If your BMI sits outside the healthy band, the useful response is curiosity, not alarm. Ask what it's actually reflecting: muscle, body composition, a genuine change worth addressing? Track your own trend rather than comparing to others, since the number is most informative as a personal baseline. And bring it to a doctor alongside context — activity, family history, blood markers — who can weigh it properly. As a nudge to look closer it earns its keep; as a standalone judgment it doesn't.
