Calculate your grade point average on the standard 4.0 scale. Add each course with its letter grade and credit hours, and the calculator weights every grade by its credits to give an accurate GPA — the same way a school registrar does it. Add or remove courses freely to model different scenarios.

Because heavier courses count for more, a simple average of your letter grades can be misleading. Proper GPA weighting is what this tool does automatically.

How weighted GPA is calculated

Your GPA isn't the average of your letter grades — it's the average weighted by credit hours. Each letter grade maps to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on), and each course contributes grade points × credit hours of "quality points." Add up all the quality points, divide by the total credit hours, and you have your GPA. A four-credit A therefore pulls your average up far more than a one-credit A, which is why a heavy course you ace — or bomb — moves your GPA the most.

Reading and improving your number

On the 4.0 scale, roughly 3.5 and above is often considered strong, 3.0 solid, and below 2.0 a warning sign at many institutions, though every school sets its own thresholds for honours and academic standing. If you're trying to raise your GPA, the maths points to strategy: your highest-credit courses have the most leverage, so protecting your grade in them matters more than in a one-credit elective. Use this calculator to test "what if" scenarios — see exactly what an A instead of a B in a specific course would do before you decide where to focus.

Semester GPA versus cumulative GPA

Two GPA figures matter at most schools. Your semester GPA covers just the current term's courses, while your cumulative GPA averages every course you've taken, weighted by credits. Because the cumulative figure includes all your past credits, a single strong or weak semester moves it less as you progress — early grades are "diluted" by everything that follows. To project your cumulative GPA, enter all courses from every term together. To see how one term stands alone, enter just that semester's courses. Modelling both helps you set a realistic target for the grades you'd need this term to lift your overall average.

Frequently asked questions

Does this use a weighted or unweighted scale?

It computes a standard unweighted 4.0 GPA weighted by credit hours. It does not add the extra points some high schools give for honours or AP courses.

What if my school uses plus/minus grades?

The grade menu includes plus and minus options (A-, B+, and so on) mapped to the common point values, so you can match most US grading scales.

How do I calculate a cumulative GPA across semesters?

Enter every course from all semesters together, or add each semester's total credits and quality points. The weighting produces the same cumulative result.

How many credits is a typical course?

In the US system, most college courses are 3 or 4 credits, though labs and seminars vary. Enter each course's actual credit value for an accurate weighted result.
