How much should you tip?
Customs vary widely by country and setting, so treat these as starting points rather than rules. In the United States, sit-down restaurant service commonly falls between 15% and 20%, with 18% a frequent default and more for exceptional service. Counter service, coffee, and takeaway are often tipped less or rounded up. In much of Europe a service charge may already be included, and an extra 5–10% is a generous top-up. In Japan tipping is generally not expected at all.

For a rough uneven split, calculate each person's share of the pre-tip subtotal, then apply the same tip percentage to each share so everyone tips proportionally to what they ordered. For most casual meals, though, an even split is faster and keeps the peace, which is why this calculator defaults to it.
A faster way to tip in your head
If you'd rather estimate without a calculator, a couple of mental shortcuts get you close. To find 10%, just move the decimal one place left — 10% of $46.80 is $4.68. For 20%, double that. For 15%, take the 10% figure and add half of it again. Rounding the bill to a convenient number first makes the arithmetic even easier and usually lands within a few cents of the exact tip. These tricks are handy when you're splitting quickly at the table, but when the bill is large or the group is dividing an awkward total, the small errors add up — which is where typing the exact numbers in here pays off.
